Chiara Teocchi recorded Team Bianchi Countervail’s best display at XCO World Championships in Cairns on Saturday, September 9th. The 20-year-old rider from Bergamo placed 13th in the Women’s Under 23 race, with a 6:37 gap from winner Sina Frei. Equipped with Methanol CV, the Women’s Under 23 Italian champion was slowed by a crash in lap 2, whilst she was in the run for the fifth position. A few hours later, French Stephane Tempier rode his Methanol CV to the 15th spot in the Men Elite race. Affected by a slow start, the Frenchman maintained a steady pace, and recovered several positions in the last three laps. Marco Aurelio Fontana looked better in the central phase of the race, and eventually finished 21st with Methanol 29.1 FS.
TEOCCHI: “PITY FOR THE CRASH, I WAS RUNNING FOR 5th PLACE”
Chiara Teocchi is disappointed that she couldn’t compete for a more prestigious result, in spite of the good feelings and the strong start: “The crash affected my race, I was riding fast. I lost some positions and confidence. 13 is becoming a wicked number, since twice in the recent past I closed the Worlds in today’s position. I’ll try to do better next year. My season had some ups and downs – the XCO Italian champion and Team Relay European bronze medallist comments – but I’m gaining experience in view of my last season in the Women’s Under 23 series: I’m ready to rock again”.
TEMPIER: “NOT EASY TO RECOVER ON CAIRNS’ COURSE”
Tempier paid big for a slow start: “I wasn’t brilliant in the early race and I lost some positions, then I couldn’t recover as I hoped: the track is narrow and there are not many occasions to overtake. I did the best I could. I hoped to run for a medal but I couldn’t. Anyway, I’m really happy with my season so far and I want to honor it until the last race” the XCO World Cup’s runner-up explained.
FONTANA: “I WISHED FOR MORE”
While high-fiving his team for a work well done, Marco Aurelio Fontana tries to move toward the future challenges: “We worked properly here in Cairns, facing the race with the best possible conditions. I have lost some positions compared to the early season, but bit the bullet and I think I performed well. Of course everybody is aiming for better displays, myself in first place, but I also think we have to accept this results with serenity and look forward to next season. The bikes’ setup is good, the team is strong and I’m also happy with this National team: today we just weren’t lucky” Fontana commented.
THE TEAM’S BIKES
