Team LottoNL-Jumbo’s riders were a consistent presence at the front at the 2018 Vuelta a Espana with their Bianchi rides, in any kind of stage: ITT, sprints or mountains. On Sunday September 16th in Madrid,  the World Tour team supported by Bianchi finished the Spanish race placing fourth both with Danny Van Poppel in the last stage and his countryman Steven Kruijswijk in the GC, both equipped with Oltre XR4.
Kruijswijk built his display riding side-by-side with the big guns since the early stages, coming close to victory and stepping on the virtual GC podium several times over the three weeks. The 31-year-old rider placed third on the Col de Rabassa uphill finish, after attacking in the early slopes of the final climb, whilst previously he had ridden Oltre XR4 to fifth in another uphill finish, Lagos de Covadonga. The long ITT from Santillana del Mar to Torrelavega was arguably one of the highlights of Kruijswijk’s Vuelta: the Dutch climber as he managed to finish 4th with his Aquila CV, competing at the level of the top TT specialists in the World. Fifth placed at 2018 Tour de France, Kruijswijk entered Top 10 also in Vuelta a Espana stage eight (ending 10th), fourteen (6th) in the Asturias and  twenty (7th) in Collada De La Gallina, Andorra.
If Kruijswijk took the main stage on the mountains, Danny Van Poppel proved to be a consistent contender in the sprint with Oltre XR4. The 25-year-old rider rom Utrecht scored two stage podiums finishing 2nd in San Javier. Mar Menor and 3rd in Almadén, in the stage 6 and 8, exploiting his teammates’ work and his ability to be in the right place in the crucial moments of the race, before ending fourth in the grand finale in Madrid. George Bennett and Floris De Tier were fifth in Caminito del Rey and Roquetas de Mar respectively. In the whole Vuelta a Espana the Team LottoNL-Jumbo achieved eight Top-5 and eighteen Top-10 placements, re-affirming once again a top-level team in every situation, thanks to a perfect mix between skilled youngsters and expert riders and to the perfect sync with Bianchi and their top-performance rides.
