World Cup, superb Tempier runner-up in Canada

Team Bianchi Countervail's Frenchman rode Methanol 29.1 FS up to the second spot after a thrilling comeback in Mont-Sainte-Anne to equal his career's highlight

Stephane Tempier and Team Bianchi Countervail delivered a superb performance in 2017 XCO World Cup's round 5 in Mont-Sainte-Anne (Canada) on Sunday, August 6th. After a slow start, the Frenchman made up positions lap after lap, riding his Methanol 29.1 FS to the second place  with a 10-second gap from the winner Nino Schurter. Gerhard Kerschbaumer rounded-out the podium. Thanks to the outstanding performance in Canada, Tempier went up to the third position in the GC. Marco Aurelio Fontana finished 19th, after fighting a long for the Top 10. In the Under 23 Women's race, Chiara Teocchi was eighth.
Tempier's delivered a steady and exciting comeback. Eighth after lap 2 (+21), then sixth after lap 3 (+24), Stephane overcame countrymen Jordan Sarrou and Maxime Marotte during the fourth lap, with Fontana also among the best protagonists hitting the Top 10. Team Bianchi Countervail's Frenchman catched the runaways Fumic, Schurter and Carod in the lap 5, ahead of Schurter decisive attack. Tempier was able to manage his energies in the late race, climbing over Carod in the final lap and finishing second, to equal his career best result (Nove Mesto 2014) and confirming his feeling with Mont-Sainte-Anne's course (5th placed two years ago). Stephane is now third in the overall with 650 points, only 50 less than GC runner-up Marotte, second.
Tempier was back in World Cup's Top 3 after three years: "I'm really happy both for me and the team, I delivered a strong display. Since the European championships I realized my excellent shape, but I needed to achieve an important result. I catched the leading trio with two laps to go, I was almost at my limits, so decided to aim for a podium spot: finishing as runner-up behind Schurter, winner of all World Cup's rounds so far, is a prestigious outcome. I equalled by World Cup's career highlight, going up on GC third position. I want to keep it until the end", Tempier commented.
After recovering several position until the lap four, Marco Aurelio Fontana had to settle for 19th. Anyway, the Prorider is happy with Tempier and team's result: "I forced the pace in the first half of the race, because I felt I could achieve a Top 10 placement, but later I suffered and I lost some positions. I'm happy because our team proved once again as one of the best in the world. I'm sure we'll manage to deliver good performances further in Val di Sole and above all at Worlds" Fontana said. Team Bianchi Counteirval was back in World Cup Team standing's 5th position with 164 points.
Chiara Teocchi was eighth in the Under 23 Women's race in Mont-Sainte-Anne. The XCO Italian champion and Team Relay's European bronze medallist completed her effort with Methanol CV in 1:13:17, with a 6:43 gap from the winner Kate Courtney. Teocchi is now 14th in the Under 23 Women's GC with 72 points.
