Dylan Groenewegen has proven his good condition once again, riding his Oltre XR4, Bianchi’s ultimate aero road racing machine, to the second place at the Kampioenschap van Vlaanderen (192 km with start and finish in the Belgian town of Koolskamp) on Friday, September 15th. Colombian Fernando Gaviria claimed the sprint victory, as Belgian Jasper de Buyst – third – rounded out the podium.
The race – 16 laps of a 12 km long circuit – was brought together into the last 15 kilometers, when a seven-man breakaway was reeled in by the peloton. The Team LottoNL-Jumbo riders delivered Groenewegen in a perfect position for the sprint, despite a crash in the bunch in the finale. The 24-year-old Dutchman went nose-to-nose with Gaviria, taking his 20th podium spot of the season and continuing his solid stretch after last week’s Tour of Britain, ended up with a stage win and two top-3 finishes.
