Danny Van Poppel (Team LottoNL-Jumbo) grazed victory at the Giro d’Italia placing second in the stage 12, 214 km from Osimo to Imola (Central Italy) on Thursday, May 17th. Supplied with Oltre XR4, the 24-year-old sprinter from Utrecht was outsprinted by Sam Bennett, crossing the finish line ahead of Italian Niccolò Bonifazio.
Team LottoNL-Jumbo’s card for the mass finishes, stage winner at 2018 Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, Van Poppel was one of the most awaited sprinters today and he managed to ride in the bunch's top position in spite of the pouring rain and Diego Ulissi, Carlos Betancur and Matej Mohoric's attempts. Only Bennett’s unexpected early sprint denied Van Poppel the success.
Team LottoNL-Jumbo’s Enrico Battaglin finished tenth with the same time. Winner of the stage 5, Battaglin has scored five Top 10 placements – out of ten taken by the World Tour Dutch team – at the 2018 Giro so far.
