George Bennett is the overall winner of the Amgen Tour of California. Team LottoNL-Jumbo's New Zealander managed to keep the World Tour event's GC lead in the final stage, 125 km from Mountain High to Pasadena, on Saturday, May 20th. Bennett got to the finish line in the first chasing group, 22 seconds behind stage winner Evan Huffman, together with teammates Robert Gesink and Daan Oliver and main rivals Rafal Majka (runner-up in the GC with a 35-second gap) and Andrew Talansky (third, +36).
Equipped with Oltre XR4, Bennett built his success with steady high-level performances through the whole race, placing second in the stage 2 (Modesto-San Jose), third in the stage 5 (Ontario-Mt Baldy) e fourth with Aquila CV in the 24 km ITT with start and finish in Big Bear Lake.
It was a special day for Bennett, who managed to take – on the same day – his first pro career win, first overall classification and first World Tour win. Previously, Bennett had finished in overall top-10 of the Vuelta a Espana last year.
