Team Bianchi Countervail's French Stephane Tempier finished fifth in the XCO European Championships' Men Elite race in Darfo Boario Terme (Italy) on Sunday, July 30th. Solo leader of the race from the end of the second lap tolthe early sixth lap, the Frenchman had to bite the bullet in the final part of the race, riding his Methanol CV to fifth with a 1:06 gap from the winner, Swiss Florien Vogel. Tempier's teammate Marco Aurelio Fontana, back to a strong performance after an unlucky period, closed sixth with a 1:33 gap.

TEMPIER: "I COULD HAVE WON THE RACE, BUT I ACCEPT THE RESULT"
Stephane Tempier grazed the dream of becoming the new European champion: "I had a 50-second advantage after the third lap. After the fifth one, I suffered a problem with the fork's lockout that conditioned me, also mentally. In the final lap I felt tired and I couldn't manage to fight for a medal. In the end, I could have achieved a better result, but this is the MTB" the Frenchman commented.

FONTANA: "THE PODIUM WASN'T FAR, BUT I'M HAPPY WITH MY DISPLAY"
Sixth placed after a regular race, Marco Aurelio Fontana welcomes his display with a smile: "I'm happy because I'm back to deliver a strong performance, achieving a solid result. I left the bad luck behind and this is a good starting point on the road to the Worlds. I made my own race, without caring too much about the closest rivals. At the halfway of the race, I could have entered the battle for the podium with some extra effort, but it could have led me to overextend," Fontana's words.
