Stephane Tempier provided a standout display in the sixth and final stage of the UCI MTB XCO World Cup in Val di Sole (Trentino, Italy). The Bianchi Countervail Frenchman, equipped with Bianchi Methanol CV, delivered a superb performance on Sunday, August 27th, to clinch the second place after a thrilling head-to-head with World Cup dominator Nino Schurter. Thanks to the best ride of his career - and right under the eye of team’s president Felice Gimondi –, Tempier moved up to second in the final standings too, overcoming with 850 point his fellow countryman Maxime Marotte and placing right behind Schurter.
Twelfth after the launch lap, Tempier quickly moved up positions and set out in pursuit of escapee Schurter, managing to bridge the gap in the second turn. The pair extended their advantage lap after lap, leading the race in pair till the closing meters, when the Swiss rider got away to take an unprecedented record of six wins out of six World Cup stages. As in the previous round in Mont-Sainte-Anne (Canada), Tempier ended up second equalling his best World Cup’s career best, and also taking his highest overall spot ever. Julien Absalon rounded out the race podium, while Marco Aurelio Fontana finished 37th on his Bianchi Methanol 29.1 FS.
Team Bianchi Countervail also ended up fifth in the overall team standings.
Tempier couldn’t hide his happiness in the post-race: “I’m super happy, I delivered a great performance, even better than in Canada. My Methanol CV helped me a lot, it was extremely fast and perfect for a track like this. When I managed to catch Schurter, first I thought about defending the third place overall. Then team manager Massimo Ghirotto told me that Marotte was several positions behind and in the last lap I even thought about the victory. But Schurter in the end was stronger. It’s the best World Cup performance in my life: I’ve never made mistakes or had mishaps for six stages, I’ve been consistent and claimed the second podium in a row. Yes, I’m really happy".
Chiara Teocchi, equipped with Bianchi Methanol CV, ended up 19th in the Women’s Under 23 race to claim the 14th place in the individual standings with 79 points: “I started well - Teocchi explained -, I was fighting for the sixth position but unfortunately a puncture in the second-last lap slowed me down, affecting the final outcome. Anyway, I’m happy about my performance during the World Cup, now it’s time to think about the World Championship”.
Bianchi supplies the team with two high end carbon models with racing geometry: the revolutionary Methanol CV and Methanol 29.1 FS (full suspension). The Junior Team is equipped with Methanol 29 SX model.
