Yates and Specialissima rule in Giro d’Italia uphill finish
Simon Yates has left his mark on the 2021 Giro d’Italia. The Team BikeExchange rider won stage 19, 166 km from Abbiategrasso to Alpe di Mera on Friday, May 28th, 2021, in a solo effort, further strengthening his hold on a GC podium spot with just two days to go to the finish in Milan.
On the final climb, the Briton attacked the Pink Jersey of Egan Bernal with 6,4 km to go, staying clear until the finish line and reducing his gap to the second position on the podium to only 20 seconds. After the good performances on Monte Zoncolan and Sega di Ala, Yates again showed his outstanding prowess as a climber, enhanced by the ultimate performance of Specialissima when the road points uphill.
With two stages to go, Simon Yates has a gap of 2:49 from the general classification leader. Relying on the performance of Bianchi Specialissima for the last mountain stage, and TT model Aquila for the final effort in Milan, the Team BikeExchange leader looks to make a final charge for the Giro d’Italia Pink Jersey.
